Tuilerie

A patrician residence that has been repurposed many times.

The U-shaped building located in the town centre is called ‘La Tuilerie’. After the fire that struck Saint-Maurice on 23 February 1693, the authorities recommended that shingles should no longer be used for roofing, which probably explains why a ‘rafour’ (from the Old French ‘four à briques’ or brick kiln) was installed on the plot at the end of the 17th century. Around 1730, it seems that this place was transformed into a real tile factory.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Hyacinthe Barman, the first diplomat from Valais to serve the Swiss Confederation (he was Swiss Minister in Paris), had this house built by the architect Henri Fraisse (who also designed the Lavey baths). Joseph-Hyacinthe Barman's building is both majestic and imbued with classical sobriety.

It has undergone several renovations over the years, with extensions and the addition of new buildings. It has also been used for various purposes. On 7 September 1904, the Sisters of Charity of La Roche-sur-Foron, who had previously been housed in the Maison Panisset, bought the residence. In 1905, they transferred a boarding school there, opened a domestic science school and, a little later, added a business school. The building was then known as the ‘Institut de La Tuilerie’ or ‘Pensionnat du Sacré-Coeur’. It quickly took on its role as a place of education.

The building was then sold to the municipality of Saint-Maurice on 8 July 1983. In 1987, the two cycles for boys and girls were brought together there. This orientation cycle was moved to the new building in the early 2010s.

The central building is now occupied by the municipal administration.
