Maison Bertrand

A rare example of bourgeois architecture from the early 20th century.

With its distinctive early 20th-century bourgeois architecture and Art Deco ornamentation, Maison Bertrand welcomes you at the southern entrance to Saint-Maurice.

The house has remained almost intact since it was built. Upon the death of its last owners, it was bequeathed to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice. It is still a private residence today.

The house once belonged to two sisters who remained unmarried and childless: Adrienne Bertrand (known as Didette), a Latin and French teacher at the gymnasium (high school), and Marie-Louise Bertrand (known as Rily), a psychologist. Both were the daughters of Denise Rey and Adrien Bertrand (1884-1947), the youngest of four children born to Marie d'Angreville (1859-1934) and Louis Joseph Ernest Bertrand (1830-1908), who were themselves involved in one of the first divorces in the canton.
