In the footsteps of the Celts

Guided tour to discover the Celts in Saint-Maurice.

People's words forge stories that tell of places. «I was born at the foot of Tan. So I am a child of Agaune cliff.» Tan, the ancient word for cliff, became Acauno in Celtic, then Agaune in French.

Through the words and legends of the past, we invite you to discover our Celtic ancestors and what they have left us.

Highlights of the visit

  • A detailed look at local place names.
  • A presentation of Celtic divinities, including the goddesses who sanctified water, minerals and magic.
  • A look at the surrounding peaks to discover traces of the past.
  • A cross-view of two key figures in local archaeological discoveries: Denis Fournier and Canon Bourban.
  • Discover objects and artefacts dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
  • A tasting of ancient wine recipes, to round off the visit in style.
