Inner courtyard of the FAA buildings

A renovation project for an iconic location in the old town.

A wrought iron door (formerly wooden) provides level access from Place Sainte-Marie-Sous-le-Bourg to a charming inner courtyard. This door was financed by the Noble Bourgeoisie of Saint-Maurice. Even if it is closed, you can still admire the historic and charming inner courtyard through its glass panes. The door was made by Bertille Laguet, a blacksmith from Chexbres, using traditional methods and custom-made to order.

The inner courtyard belongs to a former complex of several buildings, acquired in 2018 by the Fondation Ateliers d'Artiste (FAA), whose exhibition you may be able to visit, depending on their schedule (the entrance is around the back of the building, from the perpendicular Grand-Rue).

Thanks to the support of the Swiss Confederation, the canton of Valais, the municipality of Saint-Maurice, Loterie Romande, the Göhner and UBS foundations, as well as private donors, both members and non-members of AmisFAA, the first phase of renovation work on these buildings was completed in 2020. This allowed for the enhancement of this magnificent inner courtyard, while respecting its original condition.
