"Requiem allemand" de Brahms
Sunday March 14, at 3:30 pm, the Ensemble vocal de Saint-Maurice will perform Brahms' "German Requiem" in the abbey's basilica for its traditional Passion Concert.
A leading figure of German Romanticism, Johannes Brahms was a master of the voice. He knew how to make them depict all the sonorous colors of the human soul.
Composed during the summer of 1866 between Zurich and Baden Baden, the genesis of "Ein deutsches Requiem" nonetheless dates back to 1856, to the death of Robert Schumann, the composer's mentor. Another painful loss for Brahms was that of his mother, in February 1865. From these bereavements, he would write a work of phenomenal power, from the darkness of loss to the confident light of rest; much more than a band-aid for the heart, a balm for the soul.
To share his work as widely as possible, Brahms proposed a version for piano four hands in London in 1871. At the keyboard, we hear a true duo, Céline Latour Monnier & Florent Lattuga, regulars of this work.
