Concert de Noël de l'OS-m

On Sunday December 14, at 5:00 pm, the Orchestre du Collège et des Jeunesses musicales de Saint-Maurice (OS-m) presents its traditional Christmas concert.

Conducted by Ernst Schelle and featuring baritone James Newby, the musicians will perform opera arias and a romantic symphony.

The program includes
Schubert (1797- 1828), Overture "in the Italian style", D591
Mozart (1756-1791), Marriage of Figaro, "Non più andrai
Mozart (1756-1791), The Magic Flute, "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen
Saint-Saëns (1825-1921), Henry VIII, "Qui donc commande" (Who commands?)
Puccini (1858-1924), Edgar, "Questo amor
Bizet (1838-1875), Carmen, "Votre toast, je peux le rendre vous" ("Your toast, I can give it back to you")
Schumann (1810-1856), Symphony No. 3, Op. 97, La Rhénane

Opening this concert, the Orchestre du Collège et des Jeunesses musicales de St-Maurice (OS-m) honors lyric art with a selection of opera arias for baritone. From the mischievousness of Mozart to the dramatic passion of Puccini, via the torments of Saint-Saëns and the panache of Bizet, the young English baritone James Newby will deploy an expressive palette of colors and timbres.

In the second half, the OS-m will perform Schumann's Symphony No. 3, known as the Rhenish. Composed at a flourishing period in the composer's life, this symphony radiates a joyous, serene romanticism, at times light and even luminous. Originally subtitled "Episode d'une vie sur les bords du Rhin" (Episode of a life on the banks of the Rhine), Schumann eventually renounced giving it this name, preferring free evocation. The river, which Schumann calls the ancient god, is omnipresent, moving, sparkling, proud and serious.
